Frequently asked question: Are children over the age of 12 with sickle cell disease no longer prescribed antibiotics?

From age 12, antibiotics are prescribed only in cases of fever or sickness, although doctors will be quick to prescribe antibiotics to prevent problems. As a general rule, you should start taking antibiotics if you have had a fever for over 24 hours or if you are quite sick. Such a course of antibiotics will then have to last at least a week (often Augmentin© or Amoxicillin).
