Medical: Sickle cell disease on a trip?

Going on a trip? Before you go, remember to think about:
  • the recommended vaccinations
  • malaria medication (when traveling to malaria-affected areas)
  • your standard sickle cell medication
  • painkillers (at least paracetamol and diclofenac)
  • a course of antibiotics
While at your destination, it is important that you:
  • remember to take your meds, even when others tell you to stop taking them
  • if you are under 12, continue to take your antibiotics (Broxil)
  • if you are over 12, take antibiotics if prescribed
  • drink more liquids than normal (2 to 3 liters a day)
  • prevent infections and wounds: wash your hands, and wear shoes
  • when you go swimming, always dry yourself immediately after coming out of the water, and put on a bathrobe, if possible. Make sure you do not cool down!
  • avoid cold and humid environments
  • As a general rule, you can try to prevent a crisis by staying warm, drinking lots of fluids, and consuming little to no alcohol.
