Theme: Drugs

For people with diabetes, the use of drugs is very risky and sometimes even dangerous. The effect it has on you depends on the type of drugs.

Stimulating drugs

Some drugs are especially dangerous in combination with diabetes. Stimulating drugs like XTC, cocaine and speed, for example, have an immediate effect on your metabolism. This means your body starts using more energy, which will deregulate blood sugar level. Your body will respond in the same way it responds to heavy physical exercise. If you don’t want to take unnecessary risks, don’t use these types of drugs.

Cannabis

Hash and weed don’t have an immediate effect on your metabolism. This means they are less risky for people with diabetes. That doesn’t mean that drugs with cannabis aren’t dangerous though! When you’re stoned it’s more difficult to feel your hypos or hypers because hash and weed alter your perception.

Magic Mushrooms

Just like hash and weed, magic mushrooms don’t have a direct effect on your metabolism, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t dangerous. If you’re tripping on magic mushrooms your sense of time and space changes. You could forget to inject or check your values.

For all drugs, the following applies: better not to try it, but if you really want to try it out, make sure there is always someone looking out for you and keep checking your blood sugar level. Don’t try it out at parties to see what happens. Remember that all drugs are pretty dangerous for people with diabetes.
