Frequently asked question: What should you do if there is a chance that HIV has been transmitted?

If there is a risk that transmission has occurred – for example if a condom has split during sex – always contact your own hospital, the municipal health service (GGD in the Netherlands) or an ER in another hospital as soon as possible. They will then assess the level of risk of transmission to determine whether the person who has been put at risk needs to receive PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) treatment.
