Medical: The composition of blood

Blood is your body’s transport system. It flows through your entire body, delivering and disposing of all kinds of substances. Your blood is what regulates your body temperature and eliminates harmful substances and pathogens.

Your blood volume is the total quantity of blood that flows through your veins. For each kilogram of body weight, you have roughly 80ml of blood. A newborn baby, for example, has between 0.3 and 0.4 liters of blood on average, while an adult has between 5 and 6 liters.

Blood is 55% plasma and 45% blood cells.
About 41% of total blood volume is made up of red blood cells. The other 4% consists of white blood cells and blood platelets.
Plasma is composed mostly of water, while 7% of it is made up of proteins (such as albumin, antibodies, blood-clotting proteins), sugars, salt, fats, vitamins, and hormones.

When you spin blood at high speed, the plasma and blood are separated.
After blood has been drawn, it will clot due to the presence of blood-clotting proteins.
Serum is plasma without blood-clotting proteins

1ml of blood contains roughly:
  • 5 billion red blood cells,
  • 4-10 million white blood cells and
  • 300 million blood platelets.
