Frequently asked question: How many sickle cell patients are there in the Netherlands?

The total number of SCD patients in the Netherlands is estimated at 1,000-1,500, of which two thirds are children. Every year, between 60 and 80 new cases are diagnosed. The number of new cases diagnosed through the heel prick test is between 40 and 60 a year. The other 20 to 40 new cases concern older children, because these children came to the Netherlands at a later stage, and therefore did not have the heel prick test in the Netherlands, such as immigrant or adopted children who were not diagnosed in their country of origin.
